Botswana
is a wonderful country with many breathtaking highlights. It is
one of the few remaining destinations in Africa that still provides
a good sense of adventure, and it is easily accessible from Johannesburg,
Windhoek and the Victoria Falls.
The
land-locked country of Botswana is mainly dominated by the dry Kalahari
Desert. In the northwest, the Okavango River flows into the Kalahari
sands, creating the largest inland delta in the world. The Okavango
Delta, also known as the 'jewel of the Kalahari', is home to a relatively
small amount of big game animals in comparison to other areas of
Botswana.
Its clear waters and countless small islands are home to a surprising
variety of birds, plants, and smaller species of animals. The large
herds of elephant and buffalo can e found in the Chobe National
Park, which also has a large number of predators and migrating zebra.
Chobe
National Park is a beautiful grassland reserve that has an abundant
elephant population. Southeast of Chobe are Botswana's enormous
Makgadikgadi salt pans, residence to an immense number of blue wildebeest,
antelope and flamingos.
Its
territory consists almost entirely of a broad, flat, arid subtropical
plateau, though there are hills in the eastern part of the country.
Described as “Africa’s success story” since its
independence in 1966, Botswana is a land of astounding beauty with
a sparse population, bordering to only Namibia, Zimbabwe, South
Africa and touches a small part of Zambia.
The diverse landscape ranges from an assortment of wide open savannah
scrub land and vast salt-pans to the inland waterways. Much of Botswana
is isolated and remains difficult to gain access to, thus making
the country an ultimate wilderness experience.
